The main objective of the EXIST programme, “Founders of Business from Higher Education”, which was itself founded on the initiative of BMBF, is to bring to life all the latent potential for setting up successful businesses, potential which is slumbering at German universities and colleges. This situation provided the impetus for the commissioning of the VirA project by BMBF.
Economic and managerial knowledge constitutes one of the crucial success factors in the equation of company founding. Within the “halls” of a virtual academy, it would be possible for students, scientific experts and alumni to increase their entrepreneurial know-how by way of various multimedia methods while still studying or working in full-time employment: and they could do this at any time and at any place. The Internet now provides us with a stage for all kinds of new training and new learning situations: virtual classrooms, virtual working parties and virtual college communities. This research work, dealing with the designing and setting up of a virtual academy for founders of new businesses and companies, aims at investigating possible fields of application of modern information and communication technologies in order to accelerate the advent of such virtual learning.
The starting point of the study was the analysis of already-existing virtual possibilities, especially those aimed at founders of business. Both the modus operandi of and the educational standards offered by such a virtual academy for founders of business were determined in accordance with basic legal requirements. And as a result of these guidelines, learning packages and programmes and regulations were devised. The entire project was financed by BMBF in Bonn.
