Technological Company Spin-Offs from Colleges of Higher Education and Institutes of Natural Science and Technology8 (ATHENE)
  • Objectives and Description

  • This project intended to investigate the current situation and the perspectives of academic company foundations in Germany; it also wished to analyse the approach and behaviour of staff belonging to higher education establishments and extra-university research institutes when they were involved in the setting up of new businesses. Furthermore it was planned to define the character of spin-off companies, to determine potential and also developing trends, to pinpoint factors which hampered growth and those which promoted it and, finally, it was hoped to highlight the best methods that should be employed in such situations.

The whole project was commissioned by BMBF and was co-financed by the federal states of Berlin, Lower Saxony, North Rhine Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein. Financial support was also given by the Deutsche Ausgleichsbank, the Association of German Savings Banks and Clearing-Houses, the Deutsche Bank and the Gerling Concern.

Research work took place under the leadership of the Working Party of the German Technology and Founders’ Centres in Berlin. And the entire project was carried out in collaboration with the IAI Institute for Applied Innovative Research in Bochum, with the FAB Research Agency in Berlin and the bifego in Dortmund-Oestrich-Winkel.
