Entrepreneurial Orientation of ebs Students and Alumni (EntOr)
  • Objectives and Description

  • In this longitudinal study we are focusing on alumni and students studying business at the EUROPEAN BUSINESS SCHOOL (ebs). Among our first three waves with all-in nearly 600 participants we identified a high degree of a basic willingness on creating a start-up. Our latest survey wave carried out summer 2003 among the ebs alumni identified a self employed rate above 25% (In comparison Germanys self employment rate of academics is around 15%). However, we could not identify significant differences in respect to motives such as self realization or independency between those who like to be self employed and those who aspect a career as an employee exist. Our sample of potential entrepreneurs and potential employees didn’t show remarkable distinctions. To get a broader view our 2004 student survey was addressed to more universities among Germany and Switzerland. Here we got more than 5000 participants from over 20 scientific and applied Universities. Unlike former studies we added to this one approved scales like “need for independence” or “free time focus” another five factors to measure the influence of students character on their willingness to become self-employed. Our research shows that potential entrepreneurs have a higher score of “extroversion” and “openess”. Country differences on entrepreneurial attitudes are not identified. The 2004 alumni survey was conducted in cooperation with the University of Frankfurt. Here we send an online questionnaire to ebs alumni and alumni of 5 other universities. Since September 2004 we got around 500 participants. First results are expected by May 2005.
