Business Angels and Business Angel Networks (ANGELS)
  • Objectives and Description

  • The innovative founding of businesses, particularly those connected with the scientific world, is vital for the competitive strength of our economy. Such foundations create new sectors and branches of industry, all of which have a secured future. And the creating of these companies guarantees permanent jobs for trained and well-qualified staff. In this way these foundations contribute to the securing of Germany as an interesting location for all manner of employment. Those people intending to set up an innovative and technologically-orientated company – and in such cases the founding of a business from the area of science does not differ from the start-up of a company in any other sector – usually require professional and financial support in order to put their ideas into practice. One way of achieving this can be found in the providing of intelligent, private equity capital and risk capital by the so-called Business Angels, i.e. support taking the form of a combination of capital and advice. These “Angels”, who often have at their disposal a wealth of experience relating to the business world, play a particularly important role for founders engaged in innovative projects. It cannot, however, be denied that the problem of inefficient markets, which are both blurred and bewildering, is ever-present. And it is this unclear and often distorted picture which frequently prevents the paths of Business Angels and company founders from crossing. But with the help of the so-called Business Angels networks, a significant contribution can be made to improving and increasing transparency of the markets.

Literature dealing with the drawing up of contracts, company appraisals or also with the various forms of company exits, information which has been available in Germany up until now, is only really suitable for the introduction to such subjects and then only to a limited extent. Up to the present there has been, in particular, a noticeable lack of practice-orientated handbooks with which potential business partners, i.e. company founders (especially scientists), Business Angels and network managers, could autodidactically work and then develop the relevant information and the necessary know-how. It is now intended for this manual to fill the gap of vital missing information.

The reference book is based on the international updating of available literature and it focuses on the USA, the UK and the NL. It was possible to engage renowned researchers such as Robert Sohl (USA), Colin Mason (UK) and Joachim Hemer (BRD)

Financial backing was provided by the Brandenburg Gate Foundation of the Berlin Banking Company and by the bifego e.V.
