The objective of this study was the examination of examples of successful start-up businesses set against a backcloth of international, transnational and European comparisons. As a result of such an examination, it is hoped to uncover findings which can then optimise potential support and counselling for small and medium-sized businesses planned to be set up in the areas involved. The tasks of the project revolved around the empirical comparisons drawn between regional success factors, the identifying and weighting of crucial success factors as well as the exemplary and exploratory analysis of individual successes. Then, by means of this knowledge, the deducing of the correct recommendations for the supporting and advising of founders by KMU could follow.
Under the leadership of bifego, collaboration was carried out with partner institutions in Ireland (the west of Ireland), Austria (Burgenland), Poland (the town of Valisz), the Czech Republic (the region of Martin) and Germany (the towns of Dortmund and Hamm). The sponsor of the entire project was The Economy Promotion Scheme of the town of Dortmund on behalf of the European Union (Phare).
